Best Bass Fishing Lures
For some people, bass fishing may be a fun and relaxing pass time activity, but to a real lunker buster this is a serious business that requires the proper preparation and equipment.
Having quality equipment is very important for getting that hog securely landed, but the best rod and reel or boat will not put that monster on the line if you don’t have one of the best bass fishing lures at the end of your line.
Bass are bass the world over, and they are not known for being the smartest fish in the lake but they are not stupid either; especially the bigger ones we are after.
Specifically, the Arizona bass get quite large quickly (about 5 pounds) because of the summer temperatures. During the spring bass spawning season the ambient temperature rarely drops below 60 and from late May forward you can expect consistent triple digits for about the next 4 months.
We are talking about Arizona Bass fishing, but I want to get specific to Lake Pleasant which is just North West of the city.
Before we start talking about the best bass lures or baits I need to throw a 5 letter word at you that will change your bass fishing experience, and that word is “green”.
It does not matter which bass fishing lures you use, if you have a version that is green or if you can convert one of them to something green it will work better in most lakes in Arizona and specifically Lake Pleasant and Bartlett Lake.
A Mepps is not one of the best bass fishing lures, but I like to use them to get a feel for the activity while I am warming up. Ya know, checking depth and speed to see who is where.
I arrived at “Dirty Shirt” right when some well worn gentleman was bringing in quite a big one; not a State record, but this was the first 12 pounder I have personally seen come out of Pleasant. This does sound like a fish story, but he told me the secret to catching big bass and perch in Arizona (some of the perch are monsters too).
This secret is the color green. He caught that hen on a #2 Mepp’s that he put 4 green dots on the blade.
Being as smart as I am, if you say “green” to me I think grass or frog. I had a hard time putting grass on my hook and I wish I had a video of the frog, but I got it figured out.
The absolute best bass fishing lures for Arizona are frogs, the problem is it takes time to get your bait and not everyone will do that. You can’t just hit the Walmart on your way out of town at 3 a.m. to buy a dozen frogs.
I am not going into how to get your frogs, but I will be talking about how to use your frogs.
This depends on the time of the year, but we all know the biggest bass are close to the bank during the spring when they are spawning.
You need to treat your frog like a minnow. He doesn’t want a hook slammed up his exhaust, so what I do it to use a couple rubber bands to connect it to the leader. Sometimes he will fly off when I am casting, but that is ok; he came from the lake anyway. If he can make it to shore that is good for him.
Now, position your boat or stand at the shoreline and cast along the shore about 8 or 10 feet out from the shore so that you have a long run for the frog to get to cover.
You do not need to make a 100 yard cast, just lob him out about 20 feet. If there are any bass in this area then they will be coming at that green frog and I guarantee it. Frogs make great bass fishing lures.
